The opportunity to do home loan servicing by phone can be a great career or part-time job. Usually, the position involves helping those who have questions or concerns about their home equity loans or mortgages. While this can be a lucrative field, patience, mathematical skills, and the ability to explain a situation in multiple ways are all essential to your success.
Patience
When people call for home loan servicing, it's usually because they have spent considerable time trying to figure out a problem and cannot do it. Compound interest, fees, and figuring out their escrow amounts can all be particularly confusing to those not versed in banking parlance. Often, the customer may be so confused and upset that they unload by swearing, being vulgar, or simply communicating in a scream rather than speaking. It will be your job to patiently calm such customers, figure out why they are upset, and then explain the answer until they understand. The patience required for this job cannot be underestimated.
Mathematical Skill
If you failed algebra, take heart. Home loan servicing only requires that you understand the four basic principles of mathematics: addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. You must also have a good grasp of decimals in ll of these operations. As explaining interest is a large part of the job, you will need to be able to calculate how much is accruing daily and then find the monthly interest portion of the payment. If you are not sure about how interest accrues, you will need to know what methods your employer uses and be confident on calculating it before you begin work.
Explanation Acumen
If the customer does not understand after the first explanation, you must have a second, third, and fourth method of explaining the same scenario until they do understand. While some clients will grasp the solution after only one or two times through, others may take five or six tries! Your verbal skills will be put to the test every day that your work in home loan servicing.
If you are patient, good at explaining, and have decent mathematical abilities, a career working at a bank in home loan servicing may be just right for you. Many banks offer work at home or part-time hours, making it an attractive second income as well.
